Three may keep a secret if two of them are dead.
-Benjamin Franklin
Secrets are meant for one person. If you intend on people not spreading your secrets you should not tell anyone. Good does not usually come from telling others your secrets. Once one person knows he will want to tell other and that cycle will continue and soon everyone knows the secret. Ones darkest secret can only be safe when it is kept to himself.
When we were kids and you pinky promised not to tell a friend's secret, you meant it and they trusted you, but as we grew thinks changed. Today a pinky promise means close to nothing. Unlike in third grade breaking a pinky promise not to tell a friend's secret is like there never was a pinky promise in the frist place. People love gossip and people love telling gossip. When someone is told a secret they think, "Yes! I know this before anyone else." A good example that I know and find funny are older people, such as senior citizens. They always wanna be the frist to know about something and spread it around to all their friends, especially at the Senior Center, they take pride in knowing that they knew before any one else. Knowing that they are the only ones that know the secret they want to show it off, they want to be the ones credited for finding out about the big secret. Most people wanna be the most liked, be the one everyone else wants to be around, be the first to know and people do not care who they hurt to achieve this type of fame. This does not just happen at the Senior Center but at all stages of life. People who think they have to be the most liked and hurt others whiling trying to be liked are not going about it the right way. How will people like that person when they've hurt so many along the way? Enventually they will gain an untrustworthy reputaion and no one wants a friend who can not be trusted. You have to be very careful when telling your secrets today, those that are closest to you may be the ones who can hurt you the most.
